Wow, okay so, yesterday we discovered the video of Young Yeezy tearing down the stage at the Double Door, showcasing the talent that would go onto sell millions of records and crank out #1 hits and albums galore. Well, today we’re going to go a little further back in time, roughly 6 years to be exact. One of our readers (Hi Ab!) contacted us after seeing the footage we put up and sent over this video she had of her classmate, an even younger Kanye West. This footage is from 1990 and captures Ye at Vanderpoel Elementary School, which makes the adolescent half of The Throne about 12 or 13 years old? 7th-8th grade I’d say? Ironically, the stanza that Kanye delivers, titled “His Name Means Love”, is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would’ve been 83 today. Watch below.
LYRICS (Transcribed By HHDX x NecoleBitchie)
His Name Means Love
“A man who fought for freedom
A man who fought for equality
Those who were against him
Were too blind to see
what this man was fighting for
So Blacks, Hispanics, Jews and Asians could put their foot in the door
Yes, we know that this man is great
That’s why today we celebrate
And everyone lifts their voice and sing
For a man who wanted freedom to ring
Martin Luther King is who I’m speaking of
A man who’s name means love”
