Dr Dre Presents Kendrick Lamar with ASCAP Award

Kendrick Lamar (@kendricklamar) was presented his ASCAP Vanguard Award by the big homie Dr Dre at the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards that took place this past Thursday night. Kendrick was awarded the honor for “the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of American music.” Past winners include Beastie Boys, Taio Cruz, Diplo, Janelle Monáe and Santigold.

ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams had this to say about the Compton mc “Kendrick Lamar’s smart, structured story-telling and genre-bending sound make him stand out amongst his peers. He pushes boundaries with his creativity, perfectly illustrating everything that the ASCAP Vanguard Award recognizes.”

During the speech Dre mentioned how both Kendrick and him went to the same high school (in different decades), and called K.Dot “ahead of the trends” and that he couldn’t be prouder of the young mc saying “Kendrick Lamar is a class act,” said Dre. “I’m proud to know him. I’m proud to work with him and he is an important part of the new generation of hip-hop, and it’s definitely continuing the legacy of Compton. Believe.”

Kendrick also spoke to MTV News while on the red carpet at the ASCAP’s about his upcoming performance at this years BET Awards that takes place in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m.

When asked what he had in store Kendrick said “I’m just going out there to have fun man,” he said. “Ain’t nothing to it, ain’t nothing over-the-top where I’ve gotta think about it, so I’m just enjoying myself.”

Kendrick is up for Best New Artist, Best Collaboration and Video of the Year for “Poetic Justice” (featuring Drake).
